Solace: 2020 Group Exhibition: Dundas Street Gallery
From the 16-24th of October I had the opportunity to exhibit work at the Dundas Street Gallery, Edinburgh. I chose to exhibit photographic work that illustrates my on-going interest in gentrification, change and the effect on both place and the individual.
‘From Julie’s painterly nature walk through gardens, woodland and the seashore, enter Alexander’s contemplative world of deserted rooms and streets. With their distinctively different artistic vision, they share a theme of nostalgic memory, time past and present, the experience of isolation and silence, with a comforting, joyful sense of peace. Solace indeed.’ - Viven Devlin - https://smartleisureguide.wordpress.com/2020/10/21/solace/
Preparing my work for exhibition has allowed for further consideration of how I present my work within a gallery context, and reiterated the effect that framing and mounting has on the reading of the artwork.
For example: ‘Return to Sender, No Such Address’ is a series of ten Hahnemühle German Etching photographic prints, documenting the process of leaving a domestic space. This series of work explores a presence that is transient and short lasting, achieved through the use of longer exposure times.
I exhibited three images from this series, ‘Tail Lights’ and ‘The Departure Gate’ were both varnished in both a lighter and darker tone, creating a graduation of the two that subtly followed the lighter and darker parts of the image. This allowed the frame and the photograph to be viewed holistically as one.
